Stamps, Ink, & Paper Using the Color Wheel – Papercrafting Playdate 120

Stampin’ Up!’s 2024-2025 Annual Catalog can be used as a source of inspiration for card making. It is full of card ideas, tips for stamping, and techniques to try. This year’s catalog also has two pages (pages 132-133) dedicated to color theory specific to Stampin’ Up!’s 50 signature colors. Using just stamps, ink, and Basic White cardstock I’m going to show you how to use the color theory information and the color wheel to create simple cards.

All the supplies used on the pictured cards are listed at the end of this post! Are you ready to get started with some color theory? Let’s first get familiar with some terminology we can use to describe working with color.

Hue – the purest version of colors around the color wheel and all the colors in between.
Value – How dark or light a color is: shades & tints
  • Shade is when black is added to a hue to create a darker color value creating a deeper more intense hue.
  • Tint is when white is added to a hue to create a lighter color value resulting in a softer, pastel hue.

Types of Color Combinations

  • Monochromatic – Uses 1 hue. Can be paired with shades or tints of that same color.
  • Analogous – Uses 3 or 4 hues that are side-by-side on the color wheel.
  • Complementary – Uses 2 hues that are opposite from each other on the color wheel.
  • Triadic – Uses 3 colors that are evenly spaced around the color wheel in a triangle

Here is your homework! 😉

  • Watch the video tutorial.
  • Download the pdf to use while creating the Triple Time Technique.
  • Get out your stamps, ink, and cardstock and apply some color theory to your creations.
