Squares are cool! Totally! You can do so much with a perfect square shape. Today’s projects are designs made with squares, specifically 1-1/4″ squares. Squares of this size are perfect for arranging in different ways on card fronts. The patterns you create with these squares will make you feel like a quilter, and the card fronts can be embossed with an embossing folder for a real faux quilted look. I challenge you to cut up some 1-1/4″ squares and put together some of these designs.
Download the pdf for your files so you have all the patterns at your fingertips, and watch my video tutorial for all the tips and tricks when putting the squares together.
Supplies Needed
- 5-1/2” x 8-1/2” cardstock base
- 5-1/4” x 4” cardstock quarter
- 1-1/4” squares of double-sided patterned paper
Tips
- All designs are built on a quarter sheet of cardstock measuring 5-1/4” x 4”, which attaches to a card base.
- Use as many different paper patterns as desired – mix and match to your heart’s content.
- Use an embossing folder on the quarter sheet once all the squares are adhered. This gives the pattern a faux quilted look.
Square Pattern 1 Full Coverage – 12 squares
- Squares can be attached evenly with space in between them or attached with sides touching.
- Focal point can be attached anywhere.
Square Pattern 2 Around the Edge – 8 squares
- Squares are attached on three sides.
- Remaining space is filled with a layered focal point image. The Basic White square is 2-1/4”, and the matte squared layer is 2-1/2”.
Square Pattern 3 Diamonds – 9 squares
- Find the center of the cardstock quarter. Measure 2-5/8” on the long edge and 2” on short edge to find the center and place the first square with corners on the center lines (diamond shape).
- Place four squares around the first one matching the sides, then add the other 2 middle squares.
- Cut 2 squares in half diagonally to finish the design on the short edges.
Square Pattern 4 Layered Bricks – 4 squares & 4 rectangles
- Rectangles measure 1-1/4” x 2-3/8”
Square Pattern 5 Pinwheel – 8 squares
- Matte layer is 2-3/4”. Attach the four dark squares first but only where they meet the outside corners.
- Attach the light squares diagonally in between the dark ones.
Square Pattern 6 Two Rows – 8 squares
- Squares are attached in 2 rows.
- Try using a corner rounding punch on 2 opposite corners of each square for a different effect.
Square Pattern 7 Tumbled – 5-6 squares
- Squares are attached at odd angles from one end to the other with bits extending and trimmed off.
I hope you will join me in putting together some hip cards using squares and your stash of patterned paper!

I’m trying to find the directions for those cute little treat boxes that hold the Ghirardelli’s chocolates. I’d like to make them for my daughter’s wedding.
Hi Karin! You’ll have to pull the instructions from the video for now. I haven’t had the chance to create the pdf yet.
