Masking Magic Made Easy!

Rubber stamping has stood the test of time in the papercrafting world because it is like magic every time you put ink onto paper via a rubber image. At least that is what I believe to be true! There are so many techniques to try with rubber stamps that the process never gets boring or old. One of the most basic stamping techniques that is definitely like magic is called masking. This technique is necessary for layering images and creating depth by allowing one image to show off behind another image. One of the definitions of the word masking is: something that serves to conceal or shield something from view. This definition applies to our art of stamping in that we use masking to conceal one image to stamp another image behind it.

So let me share with you some ways to use the masking technique with just stamps, ink and paper and let the fun begin!

Supplies Needed for the Basic Technique

• rubber images (line art or solid images)
• ink
• scissors
• sticky notes and/or copy paper

The most important thing to remember about layering images is that you want to stamp the image that you want in front first. Then you mask that image to protect it, and stamp the other images overlapping the first (on top of the masking paper) so that when you remove the masking paper the second images will appear to be under or behind the first.
