Most of the time we focus on the front of the card, and spend the majority of our efforts on making all the decoration on the outside. Explosion cards are fun because the inside of the card becomes a huge surprise when you open it. Today I’m going to show you how one simple fold, the squash fold, can create the most basic of explosion cards.
The video tutorial I created walks you through making the basic explosion card and expands the squash fold into an actual card, a mini photo album, and a Christmas tree ornament. (Only the basic explosion card is featured in this post)

Supplies Needed for Basic Explosion Card
1 sheet of 6 x 6 patterned paper
1 card base 5-1/2” x 8-1/2”, scored in half at 4-1/4”
4 – 2-3/4” squares (2 basic white and 2 patterned paper)
How to make a Squash Fold
Fold in half, then open back up.
Fold in half on the other side, then open back up.
Flip over.
Fold in half diagonally, open up.
Flip over.
Poke the center to make the diagonals pop.
Bring the diagonals together to close into a square.
Directions for inserting the squash fold
- Fold the 6 x 6 patterned paper as instructed for the squash fold.
- Adhere the squash fold inside the card base centered in the middle with the opening at the bottom. The front and back of the squash fold will be adhered to the front and back of the inside of the card base.
- Cut the 2 2-3/4” squares of patterned paper in half diagonally and adhere to the squash fold.
- Stamp the inside sentiments on the Basic White 2-3/4” and attach to the squash fold.
Even though all the cards I’ve shown use 6″ squares to create the squash fold explosion feature inside the cards, you can make the square smaller.
I hope you enjoy this explosion card and try one ASAP! -Robin
